Join me on a guided hike to Steall Falls in Glen Nevis, Fort William. The forested route follows Water of Nevis up through Nevis Gorge to the phenomenal 105 meter Steall Falls, the third highest waterfall in Scotland. Known locally as An Steall Bàn, this iconic spot has featured in two Harry Potter films.

This half day hike usually takes 3-3.5 hours. The route is mainly path, but there are a few rocky sections to keep it interesting.

Along the hike I’ll tell you about the local area: Gaelic mountain names and translations, the history of the area, and how the gorge was formed.

Steall Falls terrain & fitness

I guide clients on Steall Falls hike multiple times each week and most people are comfortable with the route. Once in a while, some clients find the uneven terrain a challenge, but I’m there to help if needed.

Fitness wise, it’s suitable for most people, but it the route is 9-10km and nearly 300m of ascent. There’s no hurry though, we can take our time.

Steall Falls wire rope bridge

The wire bridge that crosses the river is optional. It’s at the end of the hike and it’s up to you if you cross it. Bear in mind that I can’t protect you on it so it’s outside of my liability insurance policy! If you decide to cross it, it’s at your own risk.

When the river is low, it can be crossed if you have ankle length waterproof boots, or you can pack a towel and wade over. I recommend some form of sandals or water shoes as the rocks are really slippery and sharp.

If you do cross, we have a short wet & muddy (boggy!) section then we can get right to the bottom of the waterfalls. Waterproof footwear is highly recommended!

If you have your own car, I’ll meet you at Lower Falls car park. Parking costs £5 by card. However, there’s a small free parking area here.

If you don’t have a car, I can give a lift to up to 4 passengers from Fort William.

Hike start times for Steall Falls

As it’s a half day hike, I run two start times: 9am and 2pm. In peak season (mid-July to mid-September), the afternoon slot is usually very busy, so I recommend the morning slot if possible as it’s more peaceful.

The queues at the wire bridge can be long in peak season, especially later in the day.

Outside of peak season, I can usually accommodate start times outside of the 9am & 2pm slots.
